Over the past few months, I feel like this article has become especially relevant, as even with the lifting of many lockdown restrictions, there is still so much time in the day. So I have compiled a short list of some of the best ways to waste time whilst still feeling productive.
No 5: Writing
This first entry might be especially relevant to me but to all aspiring writers out there, right now is the perfect time to start journaling short stories or maybe to take a risk and start blogging. Before I started this blog, I was very worried about the amount if experience I had in journalism and how I needed to build up a writing portfolio. This blog has been the perfect creative outlet for me to practise writing articles and experiment with my work. Writing articles can also take up a lot of time, but that time is spent doing something productive to help towards my future career.
No 4: Studying
Whilst the previous entry was aimed at fellow writers, this entry is aimed at fellow Fifth Year students. It is impossible to deny that with learning from home, we have definitely missed out on study time for our Leaving Cert. This is certainly a big stress I have for going back to school but I have found studying has softened the blow. I study six days a week. I don’t spend a ridiculous amount of time doing it but I am making sure to revise what I learned in Fifth Year, so it will take less time to go over it in Sixth Year. It has definitely given me a bit more confidence for going back to school.
No 3: Baking
Baking has been a hobby of mine for years. It is also a great way to waste time whilst leaving you with something delicious to eat. I love baking simple things like cupcakes, but also some more challenging things like Bakewell tart. I find it can be a great practical task that can be challenging but also really satisfying when it is turns out well.
No 2: Watching Netflix/Disney+/Amazon Prime/Youtube
I have undoubtedly spent a lot more time on my phone than I ever did before lockdown. I watched the entire six series of Gossip Girl in the space of about three weeks. I have also really got into Marvel Films, I really love Captain America. The added bonus of watching Marvel Movies is spending hours on Youtube watching interviews with actors and video essays about the films themselves. The internet has definitely been a comfort to me in lockdown and I am very grateful for it. For those who say it is not productive, I would reply that it is a perfect way to expand your world from the comfort of your own bed. I have learnt more about the world in the past few months than I have in the past few years and that is all from the internet.
No 1: Walking
During the lockdown, I have tried to walk at least once a day. In Ireland the weather can definitely be a hindrance to this but I do try my best. Walking is the best way for me to try and lose any weight I may have put on during the lockdown. It also good to simply leave the confines of my bedroom and get some fresh air. As something that takes time, whilst also improving your mental and physical health, walking is definitely the most productive way to waste time.
